Murphy<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What You\u2019ll Need: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A small, <strong>clear glass jar<\/strong> or plastic container with lids you can secure<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong>: Enough to fill the container \u00bd to \u2154 full.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canola or vegetable oil<\/strong>. (Lighter oil color works better because Yellow + Blue = Green.) Amount: Enough to fill the rest of the jar or container<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue food coloring<\/strong>: One to two drops. (The more drops, the darker the ocean \u2014 but you may not see the currents as well if you go really dark)<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>funnel<\/strong> to pour the oil into the jar. (Not necessary, but helpful!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How To Make an Ocean in a Jar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Assemble all of your materials and clear space to create.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Clean out a small glass bottle or container to use for your ocean in a jar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Fill the bottle or container \u00bd to \u2154 full with water. (We prefer \u2154 for more space to see the interaction between the water\/oil and the \u201cocean currents.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4.<\/strong> Put one drop of blue food coloring in the water. This will make it easier to see what\u2019s going on. Stir the water with a spoon or put the jar\u2019s lid on and shake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5.<\/strong> Fill the rest of the jar with oil. Leave a little room at the top for air. Put the top on the jar and fasten it. (Taping the lid to the jar can prevent leaks, but it\u2019s not foolproof.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6. <\/strong>Turn the jar on its side and slosh back and forth to make waves! Also, try turning the jar upside down. (Remember, the blue dye can stain anything it touches, so take precautions. Talk to your kids about what they notice and why they think it happens. Explore the science behind emulsion to answer their questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean Up Safely <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you finish making waves, let the water and oil settle. Scoop\/funnel the oil back into the oil container and keep it for other science experiments, etc. You can safely dispose of the colored water in your sink.
